Maharana Pratap Sagar, also known as Pong Dam Reservoir or Pong Dam Lake was created in 1975 building the highest earth fill dam in India on the Beas River in the wetland zone of the Shivalik Hills of the Kangra district of the state of Himachal Pradesh, in India. This lake sanctuary is a big attraction for migratory ducks from Siberian region during winter. One can see thousands of ducks in the swamp area between Shahnahar barrage and Pongdam and the surrounding shallow waters of the lake. Clean blue water all around with the panoramic view of Dhauladhar Ranges and Kangra Valley make the visit to Ransar Island an unforgettable experience.
Dharamshala and Mcleodganj
35 Kms away, Dharamshala is a district headquarter of Kangra district. Another 15 Kms from Dharamshala is Mcleodganj where the world renowned spiritual leader of Tibet – His holiness The DALAI LAMA lives with his followers. The place is now known as “Little Lahasa in India”.
The Buddhist Monastery at Mcleodganj is worth a visit – very close to the residence of his Holiness The DALAI LAMA. The Tibetan institute of performing arts and a handicrafts centre is also worth a visit.
You could also visit the church of St. John – in – the wilderness, Dal lake, Dharmkot, Bhagsunag.
On the way back from Dharamshala a visit to the Chinmaya Ashram (An ashram and temple with a difference) is very refreshing. Joining the regular prayers is a soul soothing experience.
Three are numerous Pine forests and meadows around Palampur where one can enjoy lovely walks.
Palampur has undoubtedly among the most beautiful Tea gardens in the country. The flavour rich Kangra tea is the produce of these tea gardens. The tea factory is just a km from the Hotel where one can witness the processing of tea. The leisurely walks through shaded, eternally trimmed, lush dark green Tea Gardens is a very refreshing experience.
